Nice Tool - Needs Some Modification
I bought this to install Shox tires on wheelchair wheels. It did not work as shown on the video on the Shox tire website. The notches on the Shox tires won't slide past the post that stretches the tire. I put a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe on the post and that helped that problem. The main problem is that the Shox tires have to stretch several inches to fit on the rim and it takes more strength than the two of us could muster to turn the wheel. Another problem with tool is it is clamped in a vise with the sides of the tool and it can tip as you apply force to the wheel. It needs a flat piece of steel extending down from the tool to be clamped in the vise so that the tool will sit on top of the vise and not be able to move.
The tool may work fine for other brands of tires. I would like to have a larger post that has bearings to allow it to turn as the tire is installed and a better way to clamp it in a vise. The only other tool I could find cost around $150 and was more than I could justify for limited use.
I wound up finishing the tire installation with clamps to stretch the tire and long pry bars to get it on rim. I like the Shox tires but must find an easier way to install them.
