The FR588W supports up to 700 lb (317.52 kg) evenly distributed and features a powered four-function hand pendant for infinite positioning. The backrest and legrest can be adjusted independently, allowing caregivers and patients to achieve a comfortable seating position. A rechargeable battery provides backup operation in the event of a power failure, while a caregiver-activated Trendelenburg mechanism provides rapid positioning when needed.

Unlike a conventional three-position clinical recliner, the powered FR588W provides infinite recline positioning within its operating range. This allows the patient to select a position that is most comfortable for sitting, resting, treatment, or recovery.
The recliner also provides a fourth position: Trendelenburg, or shock position. Unlike the electrically controlled patient positioning, Trendelenburg is caregiver activated using a quick-release trigger mounted at the rear of the chair. This allows the caregiver to rapidly position the recliner when required. The manufacturer describes the gas-cylinder mechanism as providing quick Trendelenburg positioning and improved lift assistance.
The legrest and backrest can be raised and lowered independently, giving the caregiver greater control over patient positioning and allowing the user to adjust lower-leg support without necessarily changing the back angle.
