Partners & Resources
Triumph Foundation The Triumph Foundation was founded by Andrew and Kristen Skinner in 2008 after Andrew suffered a spinal cord injury (SCI) that left him quadriplegic. Andrew and Kristen’s goal in starting the Triumph Foundation was to help people recover from and adjust to new lives with spinal cord injuries. One of the ways the Triumph Foundation helps is by providing newly injured people with care baskets. These baskets provide information and resources that center around organizations, assistance programs, and activities in order “to help people with an SCI with their new beginning and enable them to keep living their lives to the fullest potential.” The Triumph Foundation also hosts a monthly SCI Life Series Support Group at Scripps Memorial Encinitas Rehabilitation Center located at 354 Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024. With these monthly meetings, the Triumph Foundation hopes to create a place of networking, information sharing, and support. |

Research Studies
Well-known as a leader in spinal cord injury research, Dr. Young was part of the team that discovered and established high-dose methylprednisolone (MP) as the first effective therapy for spinal cord injuries. This 1990 work upended concepts that spinal cord injuries were permanent, refocused research, and opened new vistas of hope. This team also played a major role in Andy Blight's signal work on 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), which shows significant promise for increasing nerve conductivity.
A key component of the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center will be the Stem Cell Core Facility. This facility (the “Core”) provides stem cell technology and resources to the UCI, Orange County and Southern California research communities. By merging technical and scientific expertise in a number of essential disciplines – including developmental and molecular genetics, cell culture and cell sorting, imaging, high-throughput platforms, and bioinformatics – the Core harbors a diverse toolkit for the exploration of multiple aspects of stem cell biology.
The broad scope of research carried out at The Miami Project has focused on answering questions that help define human spinal cord injury and reveal strategies for the repair of damaged spinal tissue. The team has also made advances in knowledge that have improved the current care of people with SCI.
