Reflex Seating Cushion, by Varilite
Non-adjustable skin protection cushion featuring VARILITE’s unique Air-Release Device
NON-ADJUSTABLE CUSHION of choice for wheelchair users with a risk of tissue breakdown.
Therapists recommend the Reflex for clients who are at moderate risk of skin breakdown. Therapists value the Reflex because the set amount of immersion conforms to client’s body, providing comfort and added stability. The Reflex is ideal for nursing homes, hospitals and other clinical environments where an effective, low maintenance skin protection wheelchair cushion is required.
Users and caregivers value the simplicity and ease of use of the Reflex. The ultra-lightweight design of the Reflex help conserve energy expenditure for clients who manually propel.
Air-Foam Floatation
Reflex foam has functional areas created by two types of foam and an area of perforation. Firm foam is used for the perimeter and medial thigh separator, and medium foam is used for the thigh troughs and pelvic bucketing. Perforated foam in the sacral-ischial area provides maximum protection of the decubitus-sensitive area of the ischial tuberosities (ITs).
Bonding Reflex foam to coated fabric makes the cushion hold air. Air-Foam Floatation combines the best properties of air and foam to offer superior skin protection. The air supports the load, while the foam keeps the air where it’s needed and provides stability. The foam conforms to the user, and the user’s weight is distributed over the surface of the cushion.
Independent research has shown VARILITE Air-Foam Floatation to be the #1 impact and vibration dampening technology (RESNA 2000).
Fabric: Reflex foam is bonded to puncture and water resistant polyester fabric for strength and durability.
Air-Release Device: A built-in air-release device (patent pending) automatically releases a portion of air when the user sits on the cushion. The air-release device allows a fixed amount of immersion and prevents bottoming out. When weight is taken off the cushion, it automatically re-inflates.
Cover: The Reflex features a tailored, removable incontinence cover. The underside is a rugged non-slip material with hook and loop for added security. Machine washable.
Reflex Seating Cushion, by Varilite Buyer’s Guide
The Reflex Seating Cushion, by Varilite is a foam and air hybrid wheelchair cushion engineered to deliver responsive support and pressure redistribution through dynamic material interaction. It is designed for users who require a balance between immersion, stability, and consistent positioning during prolonged seated use.
Reflex Seating Cushion, by Varilite Durable Materials
The Reflex Seating Cushion, by Varilite utilizes a multi-layered construction that combines high-resilience foam with air-based support elements. This hybrid structure allows the cushion to respond differently under varying loads, adapting to the user’s body shape while maintaining structural support. Unlike static foam cushions, this construction enables micro-adjustments during movement. The materials work together to prevent bottoming out while maintaining a controlled level of immersion.
Pressure Redistribution of the Reflex Seating Cushion, by Varilite
The Reflex Seating Cushion is engineered to distribute pressure across a broader surface area by allowing controlled immersion into the foam-air interface. This reduces peak pressure concentrations at common high-risk areas such as the ischial tuberosities. Instead of relying solely on air or foam, the hybrid system provides a more stable redistribution effect. This helps maintain consistent pressure management even during repositioning.
Material Response and Load Adaptation
This wheelchair cushion responds dynamically to changes in weight distribution, adjusting support as the user shifts. The foam compresses while the air component redistributes load, creating a responsive seating surface. This adaptive behavior is particularly relevant for active wheelchair users. It allows the cushion to maintain performance during propulsion, transfers, and posture adjustments.
Reflex Seating Wheelchair Cushion Positioning Stability and Functional Support
The Reflex Seating Wheelchair Cushion provides a more stable base compared to fully air-based systems. The foam structure limits excessive movement while still allowing pressure relief. This stability supports better pelvic positioning. It helps maintain alignment without sacrificing comfort or immersion.
Lightweight Structure and Daily Use
The Varilite wheelchair cushion is designed to remain lightweight, making it easy to transfer between wheelchairs or seating surfaces. This is especially useful for users who travel or use multiple mobility setups. The reduced weight does not compromise support. The internal structure maintains performance while improving handling.
Compatibility with Wheelchair Seating Systems
The Varilite Reflex Seating Cushion is compatible with a wide range of manual and power wheelchair bases. It can be integrated into standard sling or solid seat configurations. Proper integration ensures consistent performance. The cushion works within existing seating systems without requiring specialized hardware.
Surface Interaction and Friction Management
The top surface of the reflex wheelchair cushion is designed to minimize friction and shear forces during seated movement. This is important for maintaining skin integrity over extended periods. Reduced friction helps limit skin breakdown risks. The surface allows for controlled movement without excessive resistance.
Durability and Material Integrity
The materials used in the Reflex Seating Cushion are engineered to resist compression fatigue over time. The foam maintains its resilience, while the air component continues to redistribute load effectively. This durability supports long-term performance. The cushion retains its functional characteristics through repeated use cycles.
Maintenance and Care
The Varilite wheelchair cushion is designed for routine cleaning, with materials that can be wiped down as needed. Regular maintenance helps preserve hygiene and performance. Consistent care ensures the cushion remains effective. The materials are intended to withstand repeated cleaning without degradation.
Reflex Seating Cushion, by Varilite Review
The Reflex Seating Cushion, by Varilite delivers a hybrid seating solution that combines responsive foam support with air-based pressure redistribution. Its ability to adapt to movement while maintaining positioning stability sets it apart from single-material cushions. With its focus on dynamic load response, structural stability, and long-term durability, this cushion functions as a practical option for wheelchair users requiring consistent performance across daily mobility activities.
